  9. CHAPTER 0
  10.  0:1  |Ignatius, who is also Theophorus, to the church
  11. of God the Father and of Jesus Christ, which is in
  12. Philadelphia of Asia, which hath found mercy and is
  13. firmly established in the concord of God and rejoiceth
  14. in the passion of our Lord and in His resurrection
  15. without wavering, being fully assured in all mercy;
  16. which church I salute in the blood of Jesus Christ,
  17. that is eternal and abiding joy; more especially if
  18. they be at one with the bishop and the presbyters who
  19. are with him, and with the deacons that have been
  20. appointed according to the mind of Jesus Christ, whom
  21. after His own will He confirmed and established by His
  22. Holy Spirit.

  24. CHAPTER 1
  25.  1:1  |This your bishop I have found to hold the
  26. ministry which pertaineth to the common weal, not of
  27. himself or through men, nor yet for vain glory, but in
  28. the love of God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
  29. And I am amazed at his forbearance; whose silence is
  30. more powerful than others' speech.
  31.  1:2  For he is attuned in harmony with the
  32. commandments, as a lyre with its strings. Wherefore my
  33. soul blesseth his godly mind, for I have found that it
  34. is virtuous and perfect -- even the imperturbable and
  35. calm temper which he hath, while living in all godly
  36. forbearance.

  38. CHAPTER 2
  39.  2:1  |As children therefore [of the light] of the
  40. truth, shun division and wrong doctrines; and where
  41. the shepherd is, there follow ye as sheep.
  42.  2:2  For many specious wolves with baneful delights
  43. lead captive the runners in God's race; but, where ye
  44. are at one, they will find no place.

  46. CHAPTER 3
  47.  3:1  |Abstain from noxious herbs, which are not the
  48. husbandry of Jesus Christ, because they are not the
  49. planting of the Father. Not that I have found division
  50. among you, but filtering.
  51.  3:2  For as many as are of God and of Jesus Christ,
  52. they are with the bishop; and as many as shall repent
  53. and enter into the unity of the Church, these also
  54. shall be of God, that they may be living after Jesus
  55. Christ.
  56.  3:3  Be not deceived, my brethren. If any man
  57. followeth one that maketh a schism, _he doth not
  58. inherit the kingdom of God._ If any man walketh in
  59. strange doctrine, he hath no fellowship with the
  60. passion.

  62. CHAPTER 4
  63.  4:1  |Be ye careful therefore to observe one eucharist
  64. (for there is one flesh of our Lord Jesus Christ and
  65. one cup unto union in His blood; there is one altar,
  66. as there is one bishop, together with the presbtery
  67. and the deacons my fellow-servants), that whatsoever
  68. ye do, ye may do it after God.

  70. CHAPTER 5
  71.  5:1  |My brethren, my heart overfloweth altogether in
  72. love towards you; and rejoicing above measure I watch
  73. over your safety; yet not I, but Jesus Christ, wearing
  74. whose bonds I am the more afraid, because I am not yet
  75. perfected. But your prayer will make me perfect [unto
  76. God], that I may attain unto the inheritance wherein I
  77. have found mercy, taking refuge in the Gospel as the
  78. flesh of Jesus and in the Apostles as the presbytery
  79. of the Church.
  80.  5:2  Yea, and we love the prophets also, because they
  81. too pointed to the Gospel in their preaching and set
  82. their hope on Him and awaited Him; in whom also having
  83. faith they were saved in the unity of Jesus Christ,
  84. being worthy of all love and admiration as holy men,
  85. approved of Jesus Christ and numbered together in the
  86. Gospel of our common hope.

  88. CHAPTER 6
  89.  6:1  |But if any one propound Judaism unto you, here
  90. him not: for it is better to hear Christianity from a
  91. man who is circumcised than Judaism from one
  92. uncircumcised. But if either the one or the other
  93. speak not concerning Jesus Christ, I look on them as
  94. tombstones and graves of the dead, whereon are
  95. inscribed only the names of men.
  96.  6:2  Shun ye therefore the wicked arts and plottings
  97. of the prince of this world, lest haply ye be crushed
  98. by his devices, and wax weak in your love. But
  99. assemble yourselves all together with undivided heart.
  100.  6:3  And I give thanks to my God, that I have a good
  101. conscience in my dealings with you, and no man can
  102. boast either in secret or openly, that I was
  103. burdensome to any one in small things or in great. Yea
  104. and for all among whom I spoke, it is my prayer that
  105. they may not turn it into a testimony against
  106. themselves.

  108. CHAPTER 7
  109.  7:1  |For even though certain persons desired to
  110. deceive me after the flesh, yet the spirit is not
  111. deceived, being from God; for _it knoweth whence it
  112. cometh and where it goeth,_ and it searcheth out the
  113. hidden things. I cried out, when I was among you; I
  114. spake with a loud voice, with God's own voice, Give ye
  115. heed to the bishop and the presbytery and deacons.
  116.  7:2  Howbeit there were those who suspected me of
  117. saying this, because I knew beforehand of the division
  118. of certain persons. But He in whom I am bound is my
  119. witness that I learned it not from flesh of man; it
  120. was the preaching of the Spirit who spake on this
  121. wise; Do nothing without the bishop; keep your flesh
  122. as a temple of God; cherish union; shun divisions; be
  123. imitators of Jesus Christ, as He Himself also was of
  124. His Father.

  126. CHAPTER 8
  127.  8:1  |I therefore did my own part, as a man composed
  128. unto union. But where there is division and anger,
  129. there God abideth not. Now the Lord forgiveth all men
  130. when they repent, if repenting they return to the
  131. unity of God and to the council of the bishop. I have
  132. faith in the grace of Jesus Christ, who shall strike
  133. off every fetter from you;
  134.  8:2  and I entreat you, Do ye nothing in a spirit of
  135. factiousness but after the teaching of Christ. For I
  136. heard certain persons saying, If I find it not in the
  137. charters, I believe it not in the Gospel. And when I
  138. said to them, It is written, they answered me That is
  139. the question. But as for me, my charter is Jesus
  140. Christ, the inviolable charter is His cross and His
  141. death and His resurrection, and faith through Him;
  142. wherein I desire to be justified through your prayers.

  144. CHAPTER 9
  145.  9:1  |The priests likewise were good, but better is
  146. the High-priest to whom is committed the holy of
  147. holies; for to Him alone are committed the hidden
  148. things of God; He Himself being the door of the
  149. Father, through which Abraham and Isaac and Jacob
  150. enter in, and the Prophets and the Apostles and the
  151. whole Church; all these things combine in the unity of
  152. God.
  153.  9:2  But the Gospel hath a singular preeminence in
  154. the advent of the Saviour, even our Lord Jesus Christ,
  155. and His passion and resurrection. For the beloved
  156. Prophets in their preaching pointed to Him; but the
  157. Gospel is the completion of immortality. All things
  158. together are good, if ye believe through love.

  160. CHAPTER 10
  161.  10:1  |Seeing that in answer to your prayer and to the
  162. tender sympathy which ye have in Christ Jesus, it hath
  163. been reported to me that the church which is in
  164. Antioch of Syria hath peace, it is becoming for you,
  165. as a church of God, to appoint a deacon to go thither
  166. as God's ambassador, that he may congratulate them
  167. when they are assembled together, and may glorify the
  168. Name.
  169.  10:2  Blessed in Jesus Christ is he that shall be
  170. counted worthy of such a ministration; and ye
  171. yourselves shall be glorified. Now if ye desire it, it
  172. is not impossible for you to do this for the name of
  173. God; even as the churches which are nearest have sent
  174. bishops, and others presbyters and deacons.

  176. CHAPTER 11
  177.  11:1  |But as touching Philo the deacon from Cilicia,
  178. a man of good report, who now also ministereth to me
  179. in the word of God, together with Rhaius Agathopus, an
  180. elect one who followeth me from Syria, having bidden
  181. farewell to this present life; the same who also bear
  182. witness to you -- and I myself thank God on your
  183. behalf, because ye received them, as I trust the Lord
  184. will receive you. But may those who treated them with
  185. dishonour be redeemed through the grace of Jesus
  186. Christ.
  187.  11:2  The love of the brethren which are in Troas
  188. saluteth you; from whence also I write to you by the
  189. hand of Burrhus, who was sent with me by the Ephesians
  190. and Smyrnaeans as a mark of honour. The Lord shall
  191. honour them, even Jesus Christ, on whom their hope is
  192. set in flesh and soul and spirit, by faith, by love,
  193. by concord. Fare ye well in Christ Jesus our common hope.
